Understanding ADHD: Symptoms, Impact and Prevalence
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is a developmental disorder that is typically characterised by inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. The diagnosis of ADHD is increasing, for a variety of reasons, with approximately 6-7% of children being diagnosed.
The most common traits of ADHD in children are restlessness, forgetfulness, hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating. These behaviours can have an impact on a child’s relationships, home/school life and study. Typically, the symptoms of ADHD lessen as the child gets older. However, many people still exhibit traits of ADHD in their adult life and, in fact, many adults with ADHD have never been diagnosed.
Early diagnosis and intervention is imperative in supporting optimal neurodevelopment. Our psychologists are highly trained and experienced in assessment and diagnosis for ADHD. They then work with their clients to help identify their strengths and manage/improve their difficulties through evidence-based intervention strategies.
Often, children and adults with ADHD exhibit high energy personalities and high thinking minds. They can be highly driven and extremely innovative. These strengths (or any other individual personality strengths) are identified and built on throughout psychological treatment.

Recognizing the symptoms of ADHD is crucial for timely intervention. Common symptoms include impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity, which can manifest differently in children and adults. For children, this may appear as difficulty focusing in class or excessive movement, while adults might struggle with time management and organization.
Moreover, these symptoms can lead to challenges in various areas of life, including academic performance, social interactions, and occupational success. Early identification and support can help mitigate these effects, allowing individuals to harness their unique strengths and capabilities.
Importance of Early Diagnosis
Early diagnosis of ADHD can significantly alter the trajectory of an individual's life. Identifying ADHD in childhood enables access to appropriate interventions that can foster better academic and social outcomes. Understanding the condition early on allows parents and educators to implement strategies that support learning and emotional well-being.
Research indicates that children diagnosed and treated early are more likely to develop effective coping mechanisms and succeed in their personal and professional lives. This proactive approach not only benefits the individual but also alleviates stress for families and educators by promoting a supportive environment.
Holistic Treatment Approaches
At Integrated Minds Clinic, we believe in a holistic approach to ADHD treatment that encompasses various therapeutic modalities. Our strategies may include cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, and lifestyle adjustments, all tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. This comprehensive method aims to address the root causes of ADHD symptoms rather than just the symptoms themselves.
By integrating multiple treatment avenues, we empower our clients to develop coping strategies that enhance their daily functioning and quality of life. For instance, techniques such as behavioral therapy can help improve organizational skills, while mindfulness practices can reduce impulsivity and enhance focus.
